Gorgan

Gorgan

Gorgán (before Astrabad or Astarabad) is the capital of the Golestan province, in Iran. It is located about 400 kilometers northeast of Tehran, 30 kilometers from the Caspian Sea. The city enjoys an ideal climate, since it is located exactly between the Alborz mountain range and the rainy currents of the Caspian Sea. There are villages in the high mountains that offer an impressive landscape for lovers of hiking and trekking. In Gorgán you can find the carpet industry, the Turkmen carpet, made by the Turkmen. The motifs for these carpets come from the ancient Persian city of Bukhara, in present-day Uzbekistan.

Archeological Museum

The opening of the first museum in Gorgan dates back to 1964, when some historical relics were exhibited in the Royal Castle of Gorgan. However, the Gorgan Archaeological Museum exhibits historical and archaeological objects from the region. This museum presents the history and civilization of the inhabitants of the plains of this city from thousands of years ago to the present day.

Gulf of Gorgán: Ashura Deh, Turkmen Horse and Caviar

The Gulf of Gorgan is the most important gulf in the Caspian Sea. It was created as a result of the expansion of the Mian Kaleh Peninsula in the southeastern Caspian Sea. The Gulf of Gorgán has an area of about 400 km and a length of about 70 km. Its maximum depth is 4 meters that increases from west to east to the southern side of the Ashura Deh peninsula. In the western part, its salinity is greater than that of the Caspian Sea due to its shallow depth and increased evaporation.

The islet called Ashura Deh is home to a rare breed of purebred Turkmen horse. It is a protected area and wild horses have lived on this islet for years. In addition to horses, sturgeons have lived in the waters of the Caspian Sea for centuries, and Ashura Deh was once an ideal place for fishing boats to catch sturgeons and sell the precious caviar in the market. For years, due to irregular and abusive fishing, the sturgeon species in the Caspian Sea has been in serious danger and the Iranian state monitors poaching. In Iran, only the state is allowed to fish sturgeons in the Caspian Sea in the appropriate season, but companies are allowed to raise sturgeons and then produce caviar.
